Dutch Water Defence Lines
Welcome to the website of UNESCO World Heritage site Dutch Water Defence Lines. A 200 km long defence line with almost 100 sturdy forts and 2 castles, many clever waterworks and a landscape full of stories. Built to flood large strips of land to knee-deep under water, this is called inundation. Too deep for men and horses, too shallow for boats. Designed to keep the enemy at bay with water as an ally.
Building the water defence line took almost 125 years. We are currently busy building this website. We hope to do so a little faster. Soon the most important information will be here in English. Until then, please refer to the Dutch part of the website.
